Clinical Psychologists with Ph.D and Psy.D. are at the doctoral level and are the broadest scholarly trained mental health professionals in theoretical psychotherapeutic orientations as well as in the ability to administer, score, and interpret psychological testing. There are over 81,498 Psychologists currently employed in the United States and only 4.7% of us are African-American. Physicians with M.D. or O.D. and Dentists with D.D.S. or D.M.D.are the highest-trained medical and dental health professionals. They are both medically trained to evaluate, diagnose, and treat people with a complete range of pathologies whereas the physician serves the whole body and the dentist has a specialty in oral health care. An estimated 3.8% - 5% of these medical professionals in the country are African-American.

Psychiatrists

Psychiatrists have M.D. and are the highest medically trained mental health professionals. They are medically trained to evaluate, diagnose, and treat people with a complete range of psychiatric pathologies as well as prescribe interventions to promote wellness. Data from the American Psychiatric Association (APA) shows that only 2 percent of the estimated 41,000 psychiatrists in the U.S. are Black.

Clinical Social Workers

The LCSW, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, has completed 2 years of post graduate school supervised clinical training and has passed a competency exam. Thus this is the standard level of licensure expected for a clinical social worker.

​

Clinical Social Workers have rich training in sociology, human development, and community dynamics that is typically utilized to assist individuals and families overcome life challenges and learn adaptive life skills while connecting them with social services as needed and referring to other mental health professionals as they determine necessary from their treatment plans.

There are over 188,401 Licensed Social Workers currently employed in the United States and approximately 15% of us are African-American.

Licensed Professional Counselors

Licensed Professional Counselors, similar in level of training to the LCSW social workers, are master's degree trained, usually in psychology or counseling. They can diagnose and treat diverse problems with psychotherapy.

 

Of the Licensed Professional Counselors in the United States, about 11% of us are African-American. The National Association of Black Counselors are THE leading organization for African-American counselors and have a directory of Find Counselors at their site.
